Celebration of life · Funeral reception

A room for the lunch after a service

If you are arranging one, the number is (204) 326-7300. A celebration of life here can be arranged in days, not weeks: a weekday is $500 for the whole building, seven in the morning until midnight, with the tables, the chairs, the dishes and the kitchen already in it.

The number, if you would rather talk

It is Helmut who answers it. Give him the name, the date and a rough number; the rest can be settled later in the week.

The hall at Bristol Event Centre in daylight, one open room with a vaulted ceiling

A funeral lunch is the one booking we hold weekday space for. If you ring on the Tuesday about the Friday, the answer is almost always yes.

You do not need a final headcount to book, and the number can move until a day or two before — it always does. The building is yours from seven in the morning, which is enough time to put the tables where you want them and set the photographs out before the first car comes in. We do not set rooms and we do not decorate; on this kind of day most families would rather do that themselves, and we stay out of the way. Parking is on site, free, and there is plenty of it, which matters when everyone arrives at once.

The practical part

What booking it this week involves

What holds the date

A $500 damage deposit, returned within two to three weeks afterwards if the building is undamaged. The balance is due a week before. There is no separate booking fee on top of it, and if the deposit is difficult this week, ring and say so rather than not ringing.

What can still change

Nearly everything. The count, the start time, whether there is a slideshow, who is doing the food. The per-guest services are billed on the number you confirm a day or two before, so an estimate now costs you nothing later.

Who does the food

Whoever you like. There is no in-house caterer, no approved list and no food and beverage minimum. In practice it is a church auxiliary, a group of friends, a caterer, or a caterer for the hot food and the family for the squares.

How the room is usually laid out for a lunch — rounds of eight rather than long tables, the memorial table by the window, and the early start that leaves time to do it — and the other questions people ask are written out in the guide to arranging a lunch after a funeral.

What it costs

The room, and what can go on top of it

The room is $500 for a weekday — 7 AM to midnight, the whole building, with no half-days and no hourly blocks. Everything below it is optional. Families take the room and nothing else, and that is a normal booking here.

  • Weekday, Monday to Thursday

The whole building, 7 AM to midnight, for five hundred dollars. Seminars, fowl suppers, showers, funeral lunches, reunions and AGMs all book this one.

    $500

  • Coffee & Tea Service

Urn coffee, tea, cream and sugar topped up from your first guest to your last, with a thermos left on each table. Around here the coffee runs out before the food does.

    $2.75/ guest

  • Projector, Screen & PA System

Ceiling projector, drop-down screen, a wireless handheld mic, and house sound over 3.5 mm or Bluetooth. The line every seminar, AGM and slideshow-at-a-memorial adds.

    $125

  • After-Event Cleaning

Floors, kitchen, washrooms and bins the morning after. Without it the hall has to be left as you found it — which on a wedding night means somebody's uncle mopping at two in the morning.

    $250

One rate buys the whole building from 7 AM to midnight. Anything below it is something you add on top. Every rate we charge is on the pricing page, and there is nothing else.

Added up

A lunch for sixty on a weekday afternoon

The way most of them are booked here, with a slideshow and with nobody in the family cleaning the hall afterwards.

Weekday hall rental, 7 AM to midnight$500
Coffee & tea, 60 × $2.75$165
Projector, screen & PA for a slideshow$125
After-event cleaning$250
Subtotal$1,040
GST 5%$52
Total$1,092

The $500 damage deposit holds the date and comes back afterwards; it is not part of this total. Food and drink are not ours to sell and are not in it either. Without the slideshow and the cleaning the same lunch is $698.25 with GST.

Before you book

Questions

How quickly can you have a room?

Days, not weeks. A funeral lunch is the one booking we hold weekday space for, so a weekday is almost always available inside a week. Ring with the name, the date and a rough number and that is enough to hold it.

We do not have a final number yet.

You do not need one to book. The per-guest services are charged on the count you confirm a day or two before, not on the number of people who were told. It moves for everybody; it is expected.

Is there a deposit, and when is the rest due?

A $500 damage deposit holds the date and comes back within two to three weeks after the event if the building is undamaged. The balance is due one week before. If that timing is difficult this week, ring and say so.

Can the family or a church group do the food?

Yes. There is no in-house caterer here and no list you have to book from, so the kitchen is handed over to whoever is cooking — two fridges, a stove, a microwave, a coffee maker and a commercial dishwasher that runs a two-minute wash and rinse. Dishes and cutlery for the full room are included. Anna's All Occasions has cooked in it if you would rather bring a caterer.

Can we play a slideshow?

Yes. The ceiling projector, the drop-down screen and a wireless handheld microphone are $125 together, and house sound runs over a 3.5 mm cable or Bluetooth.

Can we come early to set out photographs?

The room is yours from 7 in the morning, so there is time long before anybody arrives. We do not set the room ourselves — the tables, the chairs and the dishes are there and you put them where you want them — and most families would rather do that part themselves anyway. Tell us when you book so the doors are open when you need them.

Ring and give us the name and the date.

That is enough to hold it. The room will be open early, there will be time to set the photographs out before anyone arrives, and the rest can be settled later in the week.
