Southeast Manitoba · 45 minutes from Winnipeg

A southeast Manitoba wedding venue, forty-five minutes from Winnipeg

Room for 200, no food and beverage minimum, a caterer of your own choosing, a roofed gazebo for the ceremony, and every rate published on this site. It is a drive. Here is the honest case for making it — and who should not bother.

Forty-five minutes south-east of the Perimeter there is a 200-guest hall where a Saturday costs $1,250, the tables, chairs, dishes, kitchen and gazebo are already in that price, and nobody will tell you what you have to spend on food.

That is the whole argument and it is an arithmetic one. A city hotel ballroom generally starts around two and a half thousand for the room alone, often carries a food-and-beverage minimum in the five figures, and requires you to use its catering. We cannot publish anyone else's numbers and will not guess at them — but that shape of market is not in dispute, and it is the reason people drive out here.

What you give up is proximity, and we are not going to talk around it. Forty-five minutes each way is real, it is longer in a February whiteout, there is no hotel on site and there is no transit that comes anywhere near. If those things sink the plan, they sink it, and you are better off knowing that on this page than after the deposit.

What you get back, besides the number, is control. You pick the caterer or you cook it yourself. You decide whether there is a bar and you hold the permit for it. You decorate the room the way you want it, because we do not set rooms, do not decorate and do not rent decor — and nobody's clock runs while you do it, since the day is yours from seven in the morning.

The drive

The drive, spelled out

  1. Highway 59 south from the Perimeter

Pick it up at the south Perimeter and stay on it. This is the fast part of the trip and most of the distance in it.

  2. East toward Steinbach

Come off 59 and head east on the Steinbach road. At this point you are aiming for the town rather than the hall — everything after here is the same last ten minutes that people from Steinbach drive.

  3. South of town, then west on to Road 32 East

Road 32 East runs east–west below Steinbach. The hall is on the north side, set back off the road on sixty acres, with the parking lot in front of it.

  4. 31085 Rd 32 East

The address maps correctly in a phone. It is worth putting on the invitation exactly as written, along with the drive time, because a rural address without one gets a lot of phone calls the week before.

Roughly forty-five minutes from the Perimeter on good road, and there is no city driving at the far end of it. Two things worth telling guests: it is a country address, and the last stretch is a rural road — in January, leave ten minutes more than the app says. Parking is in front of the building and free, so nobody is hunting for a space when they arrive.

The far end of the drive. The parking is the first thing city guests mention afterwards, which probably says more about the alternative than about us.

The case for the drive

What a city room usually cannot do

None of this is a criticism of hotel ballrooms. They are a different business with a kitchen to fill, and they are very good at what they do. It is simply a different trade, and these are the places it shows up on the invoice.

No food and beverage minimum

We do not sell food and we do not sell alcohol, so there is no number you have to hit. A venue that caters your wedding has to fill its kitchen — that is fair enough, it is just not our problem to pass on to you. Here the catering budget is entirely yours to spend, or not.

Your caterer, our kitchen

Two fridges, a commercial dishwasher that runs a two-minute wash and rinse, a stove, a microwave and a coffee maker, plus dishes and cutlery for 200 already in the building. Bring a Winnipeg caterer who has never seen the room and we will walk them through it the week before. Or bring the family, which is what a good share of our weddings do.

The prices are on the page

Every rate we charge is published — the hall by the day, the bar, the stage, the projector, the cleaning, the coffee. You can assemble your own quote before you ring anybody, and the quote builder charges the same numbers because both read from the same list.

Parking you do not have to solve

On site, in front of the building, room for the whole guest list, free, and cars can stay overnight. No loading zone, no valet line, no three-block walk in a dress in February.

The building is yours all day

Seven in the morning to midnight, or one in the morning for another $200. Nobody is turning a room over before you or after you, and no hourly clock runs while your uncles are carrying chairs.

A ceremony the forecast cannot cancel

The gazebo is 12 × 28 feet, roofed, lattice-sided, on a cedar deck and strung with warm bulbs, and it comes with the hall. You can plan an outdoor ceremony from the city without a wet-weather plan that nobody wants to use, because the wedding party is under a roof either way.

Two hundred fits without splitting the room

One open rectangle, vaulted ceiling, no pillars in the middle. Two hundred at a buffet, 180 seated for a plated supper with a head table and a dance floor in. Nobody is seated in an overflow room watching a screen.

Cheap is the wrong word. Published is the right one

What the room costs on each day

CAD, before 5% GST, and this is the complete list rather than a starting-from number. The gap between a Saturday and a Friday is $250 for an identical building — for a wedding coming out from the city, that is one of the largest levers in the budget and it costs you nothing but a date.

  • Weekday, Monday to Thursday

The whole building, 7 AM to midnight, for five hundred dollars. Seminars, fowl suppers, showers, funeral lunches, reunions and AGMs all book this one.

    $500

  • Friday or Sunday

The same hall and the same hours as a Saturday, two hundred and fifty dollars less. Sunday afternoons get the west light off the field.

    $1,000

  • Saturday

7 AM to midnight on the busiest day of the week. Room for 200, with 180 sitting down comfortably for a plated supper.

    $1,250

  • The whole weekend, Friday to Sunday

Three full days for the price of two, and the late hours on Saturday night cost nothing. Decorate Friday, get married Saturday, load out Sunday in daylight instead of at one in the morning.

    $2,500

Tables, chairs, dishes, cutlery, the kitchen, the gazebo and the parking are all inside these numbers. A 180-guest china and cutlery rental in the city is typically several hundred dollars before delivery, and tables and chairs delivered to a rural address are several hundred more — so compare what is included, not just the headline.

A worked example

A wedding weekend for 180, driven out from the city

If you are coming forty-five minutes, the case for the weekend rate is stronger than it is for anybody local. Three days bought one at a time would be $3,250; the weekend is $2,500, so the third day and the $750 are the same thing. You decorate on Friday, you get married in a room you have already stood in, and you load out on Sunday in daylight instead of at one in the morning before an hour's drive home.

The whole weekend, Friday to Sunday$2,500
The bar, Saturday$80
The stage, Saturday$80
Coffee & tea service, 180 × $2.75$495
Late-night coffee & squares, 180 × $4.50$810
After-Event Cleaning$250
Subtotal$4,215
GST 5%$210.75
Total$4,425.75

$4,425.75 all in, or about $24.59 a head — for three days of the building, the bar, the stage, coffee from the first guest to the last, squares at ten, and the floors and the kitchen done on the Monday. The 1 AM finish on the Saturday costs nothing on a weekend booking. Nothing in that number decorates the room: we do not set rooms and we rent no decor, so the linens, the flowers and whatever else ends up in the photographs come from you or from the people we will point you at. Food, drink, music and photography are not ours to sell you either.

Not a wedding

Hall rental for the rest of it: socials, fundraisers and staff parties

A good share of the Winnipeg calls we take are not weddings at all. A social, a benefit supper, a club banquet, a church anniversary, a milestone birthday or the company Christmas party is a different problem with a different shape: you need a big room on a cheap day, a kitchen, and a number you can put in front of a committee or a finance manager before anybody commits to anything.

Monday to Thursday the whole building is $500 for the day, seven in the morning to midnight, with the same kitchen and the same parking as any other day. Friday is $1,000 — the identical room as a Saturday, $250 less, which for a staff party nobody will notice and the budget will. The projector, screen and PA are $125 for the speeches and the slideshow, the stage is $80 for the day, the bar is $80, and After-Event Cleaning is $250 — which on the 27th of December is the line somebody will thank you for.

For a ticketed event the published rates do something a quote cannot: they let you work out your break-even tonight rather than in three days. And we take no share of ticket sales, no share of the bar and no commission on food, because we do not sell any of those things. The room rate, the add-ons you picked and 5% GST is the entire bill.

Straight answer

Who should not book this

It is a forty-five minute drive to a building in a field. That is the right trade for some events and the wrong one for others, and we would rather say so here than work it out with you in March.

Book it if

  • Most of your guest list drives, or you are chartering a coach for the ones who do not.
  • You want to choose your own caterer — or feed a hundred and fifty people out of your own family's kitchen.
  • You want an outdoor ceremony that the forecast cannot take away from you, under a roof, with the hall for the rest of it.
  • You need a firm, itemised number now, for a committee or a budget, rather than a PDF in three days.
  • You want the building to yourself all day, with nobody's clock running while your family sets up.
  • Two hundred people have to fit in one room, seeing the same head table.

Book somewhere else if

  • You want the room set and decorated for you. We hand over a building, tables and chairs and a kitchen; the setting up and the decorating are yours, and the names of the people who do it for a living are the most we can give you.
  • You need a hotel block and rooms upstairs. There is no accommodation here and we will not pretend otherwise.
  • You want the venue to run the bar. You obtain your own Social Occasion Liquor Permit from the LGCA and run your own; we do not sell alcohol.
  • Your guests are mostly without cars. There is no transit out here and a cab from the city is not a casual expense.
  • It is a ninety-minute Tuesday meeting. Ninety minutes of driving for it is not a trade we would recommend.

Before you ring

Questions

How long is the drive from Winnipeg, honestly?

Roughly forty-five minutes from the south Perimeter: Highway 59 south, east toward Steinbach, then south and west on to Road 32 East. It is good road the whole way and it is a straight run rather than a scenic detour. In winter, tell your guests to leave ten minutes earlier than the app says.

Is there a food and beverage minimum?

No, and there cannot be. We do not sell food and we do not sell alcohol, so there is no spend for us to require and no catering department that needs filling. This is the single largest difference between a hall like this one and a hotel ballroom, and it is worth asking every venue on your shortlist in exactly those words.

Can we bring a Winnipeg caterer who has never worked here?

Yes, and most people do. The kitchen has two fridges, a commercial dishwasher that runs a two-minute wash and rinse, a stove, a microwave and a coffee maker, and dishes and cutlery for the full room are already in the building rather than rented on top. We walk whoever you have hired through the kitchen the week before. Anna's All Occasions has cooked in it many times if you would rather hire somebody who already knows where things are.

Is this actually cheaper than a wedding venue in the city?

On the room, yes, and the arithmetic is not close. Ours is $1,250 for a Saturday, $1,000 for a Friday or Sunday, $500 Monday to Thursday, and that price already contains the tables, chairs, dishes, cutlery, kitchen, gazebo and parking. A city hotel ballroom generally starts around two and a half thousand for the room, often carries a food-and-beverage minimum in the five figures, and requires you to use its catering. We will not publish anybody else's numbers or guess at them — ask them yourself, and ask what is included.

Do you set the room up and decorate it?

No, neither, and we do not rent decor either. You get the building, the tables and chairs, the kitchen and the gazebo, and what goes on the tables and the walls is yours to arrange. We will point you at the people who do it for a living — Let's Celebrate Rentals for linens, backdrops and arches, Honeyblossom Weddings for the flowers. Plenty of families do the whole thing themselves, which is part of why the day starts at seven in the morning.

What do guests do about getting home afterwards?

Most carpool. Some charter a coach, which we do not arrange or resell. There is no accommodation on site, there is no transit out here, and a cab from the city is not a casual expense — those are real constraints and we would rather you planned around them than discovered them at midnight. Parking is free and cars can stay overnight, so anybody who should not drive can leave theirs and collect it in the morning.

Can we see it without making a whole day of it?

Ring Helmut at (204) 326-7300 and pick a time. It is a ninety-minute round trip from the city, so come with your questions written down — the pricing page and the questions-to-ask guide will answer half of them before you set off, and the quote builder will have given you a real number for your date.

Forty-five minutes, and a number before you close the tab.

Put in your real date and guest count. The quote builder does the arithmetic, adds the GST, and emails you the itemised result.
